Why not option D? (explain why oil-well drilling requires the use of drilling muds)

I don't think the second passage even tries to explain why obms are used, let alone it being a primary purpose. While The first passage does briefly explain the need for them, this is accomplished fairly quickly, in the first paragraph. The rest of the first passage does not do this, it focuses on telling us about what they are made of and their recipes.
