Since basalt is formed at the ridge and then spread out, if anything, basalt being the only type of rock found close to the continents doesn't line up with the theory. (That said, we really don't know enough about the formation of basalt in other places to say that this answer weakens the theory. But, if it cuts in either direction, it's against it.)
