Did Melville intend an allegorical reading? Since there is no textual or historical evidence that he did, we should be content with reading Billy Budd as a simple tragedy I chose E based on the above part of the stimulus. This says that the context of the text should be taken from the text or historical

    Hi @medasmx, in this question we are looking for a general idea that supports the authors conclusion, which is that the book should not be treated as an allegory. E tells us that that the only relevant facts are the text itself, but the author considers historical context as well. D tells us that unless we can prove it is allegorical, we should not treat it as such. This is how the author supports their argument.
