Understanding why A is wrong?

I understand now why D is the correct answer but am still not 100% sure why A isn't a viable option? Could someone help explain?

    Hi rswafra, We don't know that the editor's view actually is. Perhaps the author does this, but perhaps the author's paraphrase of the editor's approach is actually something the editor concedes. We do not know what the editor actually said, so we cannot possibly know if the letter-writer is distorting that view.
