Can someone explain why E would not work? I brought it down to C and E, but chose E because it seemed more concrete.

Hi, this is essentially asking us what the author must believe. The author has to believe that the Egyptian tablet is older than any Sumerian literature. However, this has nothing to do with the overall emergence of Sumerian civilization. One can have civilization without literature, or visa versa.
