I chose D, but E was my next guess. Could you please explain how you arrived at E and what you used as evidence?

The final paragraph of the first passage is all about subjective associations, such as those between a feminine noun and femininity, or a masculine noun and masculine traits. The second passage is all about mathematical concepts, and how language relates to them.
