I understand why I got my answer wrong but how to determine the correct answer do you take the wording and match it to the answer choice? Since it mimics exact wording within the passage "connective tissue" and the answer choice. Would you recommend that is a pattern to look for?

I think as opposed to looking for a pattern in questions like this, we should just be looking for the fact presented in the answer choices that is supported by the passage.
The idea here is that vitamin C supposedly plays a crucial role in the production and maintenance of collagen. For this reason, emphasis on "for this reason", some doctors believe vitamin C can be useful in treating the symptoms of some common illnesses.
This combined would suggest that illnesses would be treated by the production and maintenance of collagen.
