I was really stuck between these two and felt that "function" as used in the passage was a better choice. Independently I liked the word engine but I was still torn

    yeah same, i was really torn between function and engine and ended up picking the wrong one..

    I think the term crucible is intended to convey a sense of difficulty, pressure, or tribulation. To call something a crucible implies that this is intense and likely unpleasant. Function has no such connotation, while engine can, albeit to a lesser extent.
