Would (B) be correct if the stimulus said that "physics and chemistry can't express the notion of purpose *because* they deal in material necessities? As the stimulus is, it just says that they don't express the notion of purpose and they just deal in material necessities. This was my reasoning for picking (C). Very tough question though. Probably would get this wrong on the real LSAT.

Hmm good question. I think your idea would likely be a necessary assumption, albeit a weak one. That's an example of a necessary assumption that I think is technically correct, but that the testmakers would be very unlikely to make a right answer. But agreed very tough question, and good thinking.
