Further clarification on eliminating variables / Instructor did not Specify in the video

In this video, how are we supposed to know to place P in first as well place S in the in-Column, the video jumps from Placing T in the in-column to placing S in without explaining why we do this. I'm not really understanding the relationship between how we are supposed to just place T then S in the in-column could someone please explain this?
