Where can we see that the author is "empathetic"?
I chose answer choice B because the author does say that there are some instances where certain attributes do enhance reproductive success and harmful attributes get weeded out.

Hi, the entire passage is a refutation of the strict constructionists. The author is not rejecting natural selection, but the view that every instance of a mutation persisting being because it was beneficial. This is perfectly compatible with the view that natural selection is the mechanism behind some, but not all mutations' persistence.
