Did the author mention, either implicitly or explicitly, that pre WW I painters had "the ability to anticipate later ARTISTS?" I understand the author did not argue choice (E) though. Please explain this. Thanks,

    Line 15 leads us to eliminating answer choice (D): the aforementioned painters "are often credited with having anticipated not just subsequent developments in the arts." I understand that answer choice (D) says "the ability to anticipate later ARTISTS," but subsequent developments in the arts could encompass later artists, whereas there is no line in the passage that contains answer choice (E). Thus, answer choice (E) is the correct answer because it is the only answer choice that was never mentioned in any form. Hope that helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.
