Homework questions on December 2000: #1 and #5

On the homework from December 2000 I am having trouble understanding why #1 cannot be answer choice E and is C instead? I guess I am confused with the placement of V. Also, can you explain why the answer to #5 is C? This was not my original answer and I wanted an explanation for why V is not fourth.

    @Reina, Thanks. The game requires us to rank 7 TV programs - H J L P Q S V. The following rules apply: (1) J & L are each less popular than H. H> J H >L (2) J is more popular than Q H > J >Q (3) S & V are each less popular than L H > L >S H > L> V (4) P &S are each less popular than Q H> J> Q > P H> J> Q> S (5) S is not 7th __ __ __ __ __ __ __ ~S Taken together we have the following chains: H> J> Q > P H> J> Q> S H > L >S H > L> V The reason answer choice (E) in question 1 is incorrect because it violates rule (5) - S cannot be #7, The correct answer to #5 is (B). Question 5 asks us if Q is more popular than L than each of the following must be true EXCEPT:. Let's add this rule to our original diagram: H > J > Q > P L> S V We can infer that H must be #1, J -#2, Q -#3 - thus we can eliminate (A), (D) and (E). We can also infer that either L or P must be fourth because S and V must go after L per rule (3). Since the highest rank L could take is #4, it is not possible for either S or V to be fourth, thus we can eliminate (C) - remember, it is an EXCEPT question. The correct answer is, therefore (B) since L could be but not must be fourth as P could be fourth instead. Let me know if this makes sense or if you have any further questions.

    Hi, I have a question on #7. The correct answer is C I picked E. While I see how C could be the answer, I still can't find my error in my answer of E. Can you explain to me why E is not correct? I want to understand where my reasoning is wrong.

    @cglee, happy to help! (E) lists the sequence H, L, V, J, Q, P, S This is invalid because S is placed 7th. Rule #5 tells us that "S is not seventh." Therefore, (E) is incorrect because it violates Rule #5. Does that make sense? Please let us know if you have any other questions!

    P: X—->A P: ? C: ~A—->B THE ANSWER IS : ~B—->X BUT WHEN THE NEXT PROBLEM IS: P: A—->B P: ? C: ~B—->C THE ANSWER IS: ~A—->C How come the answer isn't: ~X--->B Both questions are the same or so it seems. what did I miss?
