Hi everyone, Thanks for the question! We’re looking for a statement about the Cherokee council in the 1820s that we can get based on what the passage tells us. The Cherokee council is mentioned in line 45, where we’re told that they supported a move that preserved part-Cherokee elite reforms but limited the activities of missionaries and other white settlers. Thus, we know for sure that the Cherokee Council was able to set some policies affecting the activities of White people living in tribal areas. How do we know that the Cherokee council didn’t have complete autonomy in governing the Cherokee Nation? Because we know that the United States government had sovereignty over the Cherokee as well, and encouraged them to switch from hunting to settled agriculture (line 10). We’re also told that in essence right after line 10 that the group’s economic and political autonomy was ended. Hope this helps! Feel free to ask any further questions you might have.
