I chose C and understand why it is correct, but when I was answering I was debating between C and D because it seemed like D could have also been supported in the last paragraph. Could someone please explain why D is wrong.

Hi @Veda-Bhadharla,
Lines 41 to 43 tell us that the deterministic view held that "the content and style of an artist's work were absolutely dictated by heredity and environment."
We also learn from this paragraph that Watteau's nineteenth-century admirers largely either ignored the background underlying Watteau's works or recognized these facts for the sole purpose of refuting the deterministic view.
This suggests that answer choice (D) might be correct as few, if any, of Watteau's nineteenth-century admirers were willing to entertain deterministic explanations of the origins of Watteau's works.
However, the author is also not willing to entertain these explanations. This is demonstrated throughout the passage, but perhaps best exemplified by the final sentence: "Watteau did not record the society he knew, but rather 'foresaw' a society that developed shortly after his death."
Hope this is helpful! Please let us know if you have any further questions.
