Hi LSAT Max,
I see that the mention of rudimentary knowledge of how to read can be found in lines 8-11 , but I was wondering if someone can explain if/how it leads to choice (D).

The author echos this sentiment throughout the passage:
lines 7-9 "confusing often rudimentary knowledge of how to read with popular access to important books and documents";
lines 27-28 "never in antiquity did any but the elite consult documents and books;."
lines 38-42 "guided solely by the speeches..rather than by their own access to any kind of document or book."

I put to D based on the lines mentioned above. Even more so due to the fact the elite only had access to it
