What are the cues that would suggest what the answer is over the other options?

    The only way I found the answer was by looking back at the first paragraph it states that the documents used back then were for military and commercial purposes.

    @rweyer ooking back at the first paragraph is exactly the way to approach this. The documentary record is established up front as these documents, which the pollen is supposed to complement.
