How come the first diagram is P> SWAP not W&P?

@noellerubino,
Great question. The first sentence reads, "All parrots can learn to
speak a few words and phrases."
The first diagram is P - ->SWAP because the sentence is basically
telling us that all parrots can do something. What can they all do?
They can all speak words and phrases.
Diagramming the sentence to P - >SWAP is the most effective way we can
capture the sentence's meaning while having a nice, simple conditional
statement. SWAP just stands for 'speak words and phrases.'
If you wanted to, you could diagram this sentence as P - >W&P so long
as you know that W&P signifies 'speak words and phrases.'
Does this make sense? Let us know if you have any questions!
