I got the answer right, but was very tempted by (E). Is it the phrase "we cannot guarantee that he painted it" that would allow us to eliminate the answer choice (E)? Thank you!

@Valerie the problem with (E) is that while the Gallery owner would clearly benefit from this piece being a late van Gogh, this is not the logical fallacy here.
Remember, just because something is true, doesn't necessarily mean it is a logical fallacy.
Beyond this, we also cannot say that there is not any genuine concern for the truth of the matter.
The fallacy here is that the evidence presented is consistent with the painting having been painted by someone else who painted in van Gogh's style, which is exactly what (D) says.
