Well, the real problem with (D) is that it’s not really a flaw in the argument because even though different authorities might give conflicting advice about an issue, that’s not something that’s brought up. So here, yes, that is bringing in outside information unnecessarily. And also note that appealing to authority can be correct sometimes when different authorities give conflicting evidence. Different scientific authorities disagree on climate change, but that doesn’t mean we can’t refer to the majority who do think climate change needs to be solved. The problem here is that Smith thinks meat is healthy because doctors eat meat, and not based on what doctors say about meat.
