I avoided A for this question because it didn’t mention the virus being the cause for killing the shellfish around the North Sea water. To me, this answer choice sounded irrelevant because just stating that shellfish were also killed doesn’t suffice to strengthen the existing cause and effect relationship. It would be a better answer choice stating specifically that the virus also contributed to killing shellfish while also killing the sea populations,

    You need to think about how an answer choice impacts the argument, rather than whether it directly mentioned the virus. While it may not directly mention the virus, I think that we can see a nexus between A and the argument. A shows that this is not a problem localized to seals. Since it impacts other species in the area, this suggests that the is a wide, environmental problem impacting the entire ecosystem. This supports the authors view that such a problem was the root cause.
