Quick question, but the question asks, "....lends the most support to the automakers' current position?"
I initially interpreted the question quickly as referring to the person making the argument and chose E.
The correct answer choice is A. In this case, the question would have made sense had I interpreted the question as referencing those the speaker is arguing against as the subject of the question: automakers/the auto industry.
So is "automaker" being used synonymously with the "auto industry" or the "speaker"?
