Why is A wrong

I understood answer A to mean that the number has remained unchanged since the last ice age. While the answer choice doesn't explicitly say the word number I had no other way of understanding it. Why is that wrong?

    I also had an issue with answer D because how do you know how long it takes for the diatoms to die. All it says in answer D is that during the ice age there weren't a greater number of shells from deaths. Maybe later on when the time for them to die come along there was a greater number of dead shells.
